It didn’t take long for Brantford’s Sebastian Champagne to find success in speed skating.

“My first competition, I won,” said Champagne, who gave up hockey at the age of 10 and is now nationally ranked as an 18-year-old speed skater.

“At the time, I was stronger than the other kids from playing hockey,” he said.

“As I’ve got older, they’ve started catching up to me so I’ve had to learn how to skate properly for speed skating.”

Without a club in Brantford, Champagne joined the Cambridge Speed Skating Club, a group that has produced several Olympians.
